Podcasting: How to Record Using the Marantz PMD570

Overview of the Marantz PMD570

Step 1: Turn the Power On

Marantz power buttonTo begin using the Marantz PMD570, turn the power on by pressing the power button. The Power button is located on the left side of the unit (item 1 in overview picture).

Step 2: Insert the CompactFlash card

Gently open the media door (item 2 in overview picture) and insert your Type I CompactFlash™ card. Push card completely in as shown, then close the media door.

marantz displayThe display (item 3 in overview picture) will show "Reading." When the display shows a time code, the unit is ready to record.

Step 3: Begin the Recording: Record-Standby mode

Marantz record pause mode shownPress the red Record ("Mark") button once (item 4 in overview picture) to enter Record-standby mode. The red record button will start to flash and black recording circle in the display will also flash. Record-standby mode allows you to preview the recording input level and make adjustments before actually recording.

Step 4: Verifying and Adjusting the Recording Level

marantz input meterVerify the recording level by speaking into the room microphone at the volume you will be lecturing. The black bars on the input meter should not bounce past the "6" mark on the meter scale (about 80% of the way across the meter).

If the black bars on the meter only peak half way across the meter, continue speaking while turning the "REC LEVEL" dial clockwise (item 7 in the overview picture) until the bars peak around 80%. If the display reads -0DB and the meter is still too low, turn up the room microphone volume.

marantz input level dialIf the black bars on the meter go beyond 80%, continue speaking while turning the "REC LEVEL" dial counter-clockwise until the meter peaks around 80%.

Step 5: Start the Recording

To start the recording, press the red record button again. The button should remain lit and the indictator in the display should be a solid black circle.

Step 6: Stop the Recording

marantz stop buttonTo stop the recording, press the white Stop ("Cancel") button (item 5 in overview picture). This will end the recording and create an mp3 file on your CompactFlash card.

If you record again, you will create a new mp3 file. To pause a recording in the middle of your lecture and create a continuous mp3 file, see the additional note at the end of these instructions "How to Pause a Recording."

Step 7: Remove the CompactFlash card

plunger in the out positionTo remove your CompactFlash™ card, make sure you have stopped the recording. Gently open the media door and gently press the black plunger located to the left of your CompactFlash card. The plunger will pop out.

Now push the plunger back in to eject your CF card. The plunger should remain seated in the "in" position. If it does not, please push the plunger in until it clicks into place.

After removing your card, gently close the media door.

Step 8: Turn the Power Off

Marantz power buttonWhen you are finished using the Marantz PMD570, turn the power off by pressing the power button (item 1 in overview picture).

Additional Information: How to Pause a Recording

play pause button shownYou can pause a recording at any time by pressing the green "Play/Pause" button. In the display area, the black recording circle icon will flash. To resume recording, press the red record button.
